Many of us are heartbroken & angry with the direction our country is headed, and not sure where to turn. The next election isn’t going to save us, and we’ll never find peace when our eyes are downcast. God’s Word tells us to PRAY unceasingly, when we arise and go out and come back in and when we lie down (Deuteronomy). In other words – all the time. Here is HOW:
When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, THEN I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.
2 Chronicles 7:13-15
We are to HUMBLE ourselves + PRAY & SEEK the Lord (determine to get close) + TURN (repent) = GOD WILL…!!
Ancient Israel incurred the anger of God because “they did what was evil in His sight.” God determines the purity or foulness of men’s actions according to His standard for moral living, not ours. The Israelites were told not to intermarry with the locals because they’d be seduced away from YHWH to other gods. What did they do? They took foreign wives & husbands from the Canaanite peoples. God told them to recite the book of the Law (Deuteronomy) at specific times so they’d remember His teachings. What’d they do? They lost the Law until King Josiah found it, realized its importance, and had everyone listen to its reading.
God cannot abide sin because He is a just and holy God. The stench of evil is abhorrent to Him; the smell of disobedience is anathema. His standard for morality is something man cannot achieve because we are born into sin. Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden began the stamp of sin on every human soul, and created an abyss between God and man. Until God…
Until God made a way for man to no longer be separated from Himself. He created a bridge over the sin abyss through His standard – through Jesus Christ. Jesus was born, lived a sinless life, died, and was raised again by the power of God. This supernatural power that raised Jesus from the dead is available for everyone who calls on the name of Jesus, confesses that they are a sinner in need of redemption, and believes Jesus is the Son of God who can save him from eternity apart from God.
This is the Good News – the Gospel – that Christ followers believe. How wonderful!! Christians choose to live lives headed by Christ and His will, not our own. This is the self-denial that should accompany the Christ follower. Our witness must include an honest assessment of sin and an invitation not just to morality, but to life: life with Jesus. We should be broken in our grief of our sin. From this place of humility, God raises great doers of His will.
What will it take for you to fall on your knees before God and confess your sin? What will it take for all of us to do so? Once we embark on this course, the Lord promises He will listen to our prayers, forgive our sin, and heal our land. Praise God!! Can you imagine what God will do if we are fervently praying all across America? God answers prayer, and I believe only He can bring lasting change. Let’s begin by humbling ourselves.
